Careers in Computing

Careers in ComputingA degree in computing opens the door to a range of careers, including business analyst, system administrator, network designer and/or administrator, database administrator, web designer and/or programmer, software engineer, systems security specialist, and so on. There are many sites that give you more information on the types of job that may be open to you when you graduate, including the ICT Career Portal maintained by the Australian Computer Society, Discover IT maintained by the Canadian Software Human Resource Council, and Career Space maintained by IT companies with the help of the European Union. Another useful resource is the Computing Careers information page produced by the Association of Computing Machinery, a large international organization for IT professionals. You may also want to look at what some of our graduates have to say about their jobs.

Also, although there are some alarming stories in the media on overseas outsourcing of IT related jobs, allegedly resulting in a significant loss of American IT jobs, the job prospects for graduates from the College of Information Technology remain good. For example, the Bureau of Labor’s employment projections for 2004 to 2014 lists 5 IT related among the 12 fastest growing occupations. Moreover, according to articles in Business Week, Computer World and the CIO magazine there is a growing and vibrant job market for graduates from IT programs.  Indeed, according to an article in Information Week companies are starting to worry about not being able to attract the IT professionals that they need. With many IT specialists likely to retire over the new two years or so, companies are also likely to struggle with simply replacing IT personnel that have decided to retire.

Starting salaries for graduates from the College of Information Technology vary greatly, and depend on the location and the organization, and whether you have any prior experience. However, no matter what your starting salary, you can expect significant salary increases after a few years in almost all cases. Again, some of our graduates are pretty frank about what they earn.
