The College of Information Technology

The College of Information Technology (CIT) consists of three academic departments, namely the Departments of Computer Sciences, Information Systems, and Information Technology. Opened as a $33 million state-of-the-art facility on July 1, 2003, the College of IT is complete with 25 interactive learning and study rooms, 10 computer labs, 14 electronic classrooms, a 120-seat lecture hall and a 240-seat auditorium, occupying nearly 140,000 square feet. In addition, the new College of Information Technology building houses the IT Store and the Hard Drive Café. The building also features a soaring, two-story atrium lobby looking out to the campus.

The College of Information Technology is designed to train tomorrow's innovators and entrepreneurs, those digital problem-solvers who will lead America's fastest growing career field.  The College’s undergraduate curricula are highly interdisciplinary, consisting of innovative application courses that build upon and encourage collaboration among existing academic programs.  CIT graduates find career opportunities in various IT related fields that include establish and maintain computer networks, design web pages using sound and graphics, maintain databases, help businesses work smarter, and share information around the world through telecommunications.

The College of Information Technology currently offers three undergraduate academic programs, namely the bachelor of science in Computer Science, the bachelor of science in Information Technology, and, in collaboration with the College of Business Administration, the bachelor in business administration Information Systems emphasis.  The College also works with the College of Science and Technology in offering the Computer Sciences option in the Master of Science in Mathematics, and with the College of Business Administration in offering the Information Systems specialization in the MBA program. The various programs are intertwined with each other to build and support a solid educational foundation in information technology and its opportunities of specialization in the computer technology fields.  Each academic program is solidly focused on meeting the needs of students and in preparing them to be IT, IS and CS professionals in an organizational and societal context through the selection, creation, deployment and integration of computing technologies, systems, and sciences.

The College is unique in that it is one of the first to have achieved accreditation for all its undergraduate programs.  The programs in computer science and information technology are accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), while the program in Information Systems is indirectly accredited as the College of Business Administration is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business (AACSB).  Our IT program has the distinction of being among the first three programs in IT in the country to be accredited by ABET.

As the newest facility on campus, the College of Information Technology has quickly established itself as a student-centered learning community that presents, applies, and extends the current boundaries of knowledge regarding today's dynamic technology based global environment.  The College of Information Technology is among the nation’s leaders in the training of those students who will one day dominate the High Tech sector of the economy.  Just as Georgia Southern University strives to become widely recognized as one of the best comprehensive universities in the country, the College of IT aims to become nationally and internationally recognized as one of the best worldwide.
