WHAT ARE THE COMPUTER SCIENCES?

Computer Sciences includes the technical infrastructure for any use of a computer. This includes systems software, such as database systems, compilers, operating systems and programming languages as well as application areas such as computer animation, speech recognition, computer vision, the Internet, publishing, multimedia, user interfaces, security, telephony and many more.

 

WHY MAJOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCES?

The Department of Computer Sciences will partner with students to design tomorrow’s Internet and Intranet. We educate systems engineers and software architects who will lead America’s fastest growing career field. CS graduates will design the software technology that will entertain, transport, communicate, educate, finance and defend future generations of Americans.

 

WHAT ARE THE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN CS?

CS is one of the fastest growing job sectors. In Georgia, CS-related jobs will be one of the fastest growing occupations between 2005-2010. Companies supporting Georgia Southern’s CS program includes Apple,  BellSouth, Microsoft, Georgia Pacific Corporation, GulfStream, Total Systems, and Sun.

WHAT IS THE COURSE OF STUDY FOR A CS MAJOR?

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science includes a strong CS core with an emphasis on group communication and project management. Courses in physical science and mathematics are also required.

 

Courses

·        48 hours of computer science

·        17 hours mathematics

·        12 hours laboratory science

·        one-year sequence in computer engineering
