February 2009 Press Release - GSU College of Information Technology Offers Students High-Demand Certificate
Atlanta SAP Users Group (ASUG) meeting
Here is some follow up from the ASUG (Atlanta SAP Users Group) meeting that Tom Case, Linda Wilke, and several of our IS students attended in March. This one comes from one of our CIT Advisory Board members about a student named Olu Ojo:
"Olu from GSU who attended our ASUG meeting at Newell Rubbermaid and came up to me and talked for about 10 minutes. He came on-site for an intern interview and we will be offering him the position. He blew people away and represented GSU very well. Made me very proud to be on the BOD. He is going to get a great opportunity over here working with cutting edge SAP tools and technologies - this is a major break for him to start his career."
BMW Partners with IS Department
BMW representatives from their North American headquarters in Spartanburg, SC visited campus to establish a long-term partnership with Georgia Southern. BMW is interested in business students majoring in Information Systems and the ERP/SAP emphasis. Coops and internships are now available to qualifying students.
What's it like to work at BMW? Here's an email from Spring 2009 BMW Coop Student, Seth Andrews:
I am having a wonderful experience at BMW so far! It took a couple of weeks to get settled in, but then I really hit the ground running on many, many projects. They include:
- ABAP Programming Project: sending data from SAP to other databases, such as Oracle. This was a difficult task because there is very little documentation available anywhere on this (books, internet, Google, SAP SDN, etc.). I am in the final stages of testing with people in Germany. Once all the tests are successful, I will be sending my program on to validation and then release into production. A person’s first program into production is a pretty big deal, so it is very exciting and nerve-racking.
- I am involved in a very important RFID project. This project has allowed me to meet many of IBM's and BMW's Senior Management and attend meetings with people from the UK and Germany.
- Here at BMW Spartanburg we are expanding the plant by adding on a whole new production line. This is the main focus for most of the people in IT at our plant. I have been assigned to a team for this project. It is an exciting project but a lot to take on as an intern. I am still learning a great deal about the business. One of the most important things about being in the IT Department here is that you MUST understand the business and how it works. In this project I have started out with small tasks which keep growing and growing. My manager has put a lot of faith in me and would like me to take on the role of finding and editing programs/function modules. This is really going to give me some great experience with ABAP programming.
- I am currently busy with a project implementing SolMan (SAP Solution Manager) and ChaRM (SAP Change Request Manager) at plant Spartanburg. They have been letting me do some documentation as well as some of the implementation into the system. This is an important implementation but also another learning experience for me. My manager actually asked me today out of the blue when I would be graduating because he has been talking to the IT Director for BMW Americas about me; he would like to hire me when I graduate. That was very exciting to find out!
As you can see, I have been very, very busy lately. It has been a blast so far! I do like to work hard because I love to see the benefits and rewards at the end of the day. They are really giving me everything and more of what I wanted out of this, and honestly, the key to all of this has been networking. I have also been taking every opportunity given to me as well. I am learning from others, and others are learning from me! --Seth
JCB Savannah Internship Experience
Olu Oju completed an intership with JCB of Savannah, Georgia. He help develop a POS (Point of Sale) system and learned alot about the BW (Business Warehousing) component of SAP. Olu is an Information Systems major pursuing the ERP/SAP emphasis area. He was the first intern from IS to work at JCB, but I'm sure that he won't be the last!
